Living with someone and their dementia
Hi guys welcome back to my blog hope you’re all doing really well,
WHO ? WHAT ? WHERE? WHY?
I haven’t done a blog for awhile so I thought it’s time to come back and do another one, hope you enjoy reading them as much as I do writing them.
Okay so this blog is for someone who is incredibly special to me who watch me grow up who helped me grow up he gave me strength and he also showed me love kindness compassion respect.
So when I first heard of dementia I didn’t know what it was,
was it a disease ?
was it curable ?
is it a lifetime disease ?
would it last a couple of years ...... who was i to know...?
The thing with Alzheimer’s dementia and Louis bodies is it doesn’t just affect one person but it affects the whole entire family and people around the person.
I first found out what Alzheimer’s was and dementia was many years ago ( after my grandad got diagnosed with it) but before then I had no idea what it was or what it did…
So this post is about my grandad his name is Roy, since I was a baby he’s been a big part my life me my mum and dad lived with him and my Nana for the first couple of years of my life. He helped me grow, he watched me grow he helped me to be who I am today.
Grown-up everything seemed fine life was fine Family was good the laughs and memories were building nothing seem to get in our way. And to this day it still won’t.
Over the past 15 maybe more years dementia has taken its toll on this family mentally physically emotionally. It’s been draining , not only has it had its low days but it’s also had its very High days.
What we couldn’t come to terms with was why are family? Why my grandad? Why my dad? Why my husband? Why Roy? As a family would never expect it to happen to you.
Over the years my grandad deteriorated slowly started with memory loss forgetting little things that’s when we noticed a change. Especially when someone starts acting different different to what they normally would...
We knew we had to act upon this was it the right thing to do? Is it too late?
Okay so now going to talk to you a little bit about what dementia is what Alzheimer’s is and what Louis bodies are...
Dementia
Dementia is a term used to describe a range of neurological diseases that can easily progress, these are conditions affecting the brain. There are over 200 types of dementia, but the five most common are: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and mixed dementia. Some people may have a combination of different types of dementia and these are commonly called mixed dementia.
The brain cells are made up of different nerves “ Neurone “ which communicate together by sending messages from one part of the brain to the nerves. Dementia damages the nerves in the brain cell which stops messages being sent properly And stops the brain working normally. Different dementia of different people in different ways.
Dementia in the uk ( quote from : www.dementiauk.Org )
Dementia is a global concern but it is most often seen in wealthier countries, where people are likely to live into very old age. The Alzheimer’s Society (2014) reports there are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today. Of these, approximately, 42,000 are people with young onset dementia, which affects people under the age of 65. As a person’s age increases, so does the risk of them developing dementia. It is estimated that the number of people living with dementia in the UK by 2021 will rise to over one million. Rates of diagnosis are improving but many people with dementia are thought to still be undiagnosed.

If you ask me my grandad is a hero although he has all this going on inside of his head and he doesn’t know any different anymore he still puts on a fight he still hold his head high although he may not remember who we are he recognises is.
My grandad had to give up work because he couldn’t do it anymore he could remember to do the simplest of jobs and for him that was probably the hardest part out of everything because he was a hard worker a grafter and a keen person to get his job is complete. He will look after his three kids my dad my auntie and my uncle and his wife my Nana. Even when he was struggling he still made sure they were his first priority. He also has grandchildren who was put as a priority. And to this day even though he’s not sure who you are or where he is he still make sure we are okay in his own little way.

I take my hat off to my Nan she’s been incredible through all of this, she looked after him she retired she became his carer. If anything I’ve done that and salute her for her daily commitment to him. My Nana never got a retirement because when she retired she became a full-time carer. She is the rock of the family as well. When times are hard she makes them easier when time is it sad she make some fun like nothing ever happened. So Nana if you ever get chance to read this I just wanna say thank you, thank you for standing there and holding his family together you’re an incredible lady and his family is lucky to have you about. when times are hard she makes them easier when times are sad she makes them fun like nothing ever happened. My grandad is now in a home he’s been in a home since May 2019 and although his progression isn’t getting better it’s getting worse he still manages to wear a smile so manages to laugh and still manages to be the hero is always been.
